Brazil
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is called by the locals "The Marvelous City", and it truly is, in my opinion, a place you should see. To get there, if you are an American, first you will need a passport and a visa from the Brazilian Government, easily aqquired, next, make reservations for passage and a hotel, but before you buy, sign up for frequent flier program from the host airline, or find a bed and breakfast they call a "Pousada" (google search)usually cheaper than a hotel and not lacking in services.Best if you have a friend there, your stay will be much more rewarding. Some words of advice, FIRST, DO NOT STRAY OFF THE MAIN STREETS into one of the neighborhoods wear the average Brazilian lives, it can be quite dangerous. Observe how the locals are dressed and buy you some clothes like they wear, shorts, tank tops, flip flops, you will look less like a tourist. Don't wear a bunch of jewelry, take care not to flash your money, try and keep your camera hidden as best as possible, and for goodness sakes do not wear a fanny pack, no western clothes, cowboy boots or hats, try and blend in instead of sticking out like a sore thumb, trust me, they will still know you are a tourist because you are going to have to speak. On that note, go to a bookstore and get yourself a basic Brazilian language book/audio course, it will help you tremendously. Food. Well, they have McDonald's, but almost any restaurant will serve you some of the most delicious food on the planet, the food isn't spicy like in Mexico, but they do use a lot of onion and garlic, you will find most menus in English and Portuguese. PIZZA is very popular Money? Use your debit/credit card, you can withdraw from almost any ATM machine, and the rate of exchange is much lower than a money exchange or bank will charge. I think I will move there when I retire. But then, I am biased because I married a Brazilian lady... I wish you well on your trip, and i hope you enjoy it half as much as I did.
